Consider reading Kathleen Yancey's "Made Not Only in Words: Composition in a New Key." The "new face" on writing has a substantial history in Rhetoric and Composition. Beyond characterizing this as a recent phenomenon that arrived with NCTE's National Day on Writing, consider digging more deeply into the history of Rhetoric and Composition.
