I would like to see entries like this and others on figures or tropes to go more deeply into the effects or implications. In other words, what does a simile allow us, as writers, to do? What happens when we establish a similarity-based comparison between two things? Too often we hear about simile as "a comparison using like or as." This is commonplace when the term is approached as a literary device. But I wonder whether we can describe (or capture through examples) what it does in practice. That is, what do similes make possible that simile-free language does not?
