Strunk & White -- Jfaulkne 17:03, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I am thinking of doing a bio page on Strunk and/or White. Is anyone else interested in contributing to an entry about either of them?
Re: Strunk & White -- Abartley 17:11, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- I would definitely be willing to collaborate with you on this!! I was thinking about doing a page on E.B. White.
Re: Strunk & White -- Bmann2 20:50, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- I would be glad to pitch in on either one of these pages.
Re: Strunk & White -- Kkrontz 19:44, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hey! I am interested in contributing. I can do Strunk if you like?
Re: Strunk & White -- Jfaulkne 16:21, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- I made a page for Strunk but there was not a lot of stuff on him. If anyone can find extra information to add to his page that would be awesome!!
Request to collaborate -- Ewojnar 17:12, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Is anyone in the 11 class interested in collaborating on this assignment?
Re: Request to collaborate -- Dmueller 18:23, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- Note: you are welcome to collaborate across sections of ENGL328. This writing platform lends itself to collaboration not necessarily restricted to either section of ENGL328 this semester.

Still in the thinking phase. Anyone have any other ideas?
Page on Williams -- Estratos 01:15, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi all! I think I am going to start a page on Williams. Since he's the author we're working with, I think it's only fitting that we have a page on him! If anyone wants to collaborate, I'd be happy to work together. I'm sure there's plenty out there to sort through...
Re: Page on Williams -- Estratos 01:42, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- Oops. Failed to realize there's already a page started on Williams. Did someone from this semester start that or is it a page from previous classes?
Re: Re: Page on Williams -- Estratos 01:46, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- And again, ya'll. Apparently I am just gonna go ahead and make an example out of myself for this project! In looking at the page, under "history," I do indeed see that students from this semester are working on Williams. My bumbling around to figure wiki out is evident, but maybe someone else will learn from my errors :) Research before you write!
The Elements of Style -- Kkrontz 20:12, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
I am summarizing The Elements of Style for my wiki. I was a little unsure, but I think I am going to actually like doing it.
Re: The Elements of Style -- Kkrontz 20:26, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
- New idea. Length
Help with emphasis -- Amille90 16:36, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Does anyone have any other style book suggestions that might help with emphasis? I've used Style and Elements but I want to have another book that I can discuss.
Re: Help with emphasis -- Steve Arquette 03:05, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- I don't have any style books that deal with emphasis directly but it could be categorized under rhetorical theory, and a lot of books deal with that.
In writing there is the context and derivation from context, which is the emphasis. Or writing with a certain tone and emphasis is gained by changing from that tone. Which means nothing is gained by shouting all the time, one must usually keep a converstaional tone.
- So instead of looking for "emphasis" in a stylebook, look up "figures of speech," "stylistic devices," or "rhetorical devices".
- Figures of speech, can give "emphasis, freshness of expression, or clarity" by using either the addition, omission, substitution, or transposition from rhetorical theory.
- Emphasis can be gained using sentence breaks - or foreign phrases or italics. These are all covered in "The Elements of Grammar" by Margaret Shertzer. Hope that helps.
main page -- Khotton 19:53, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
The main page seems really disorderly. I think that it is confusing to have to the last semester's page separated from this semester's contributions. Does anyone else think that we should just combine the two so that there are not duplicate subjects?
Re: main page -- Amille90 17:29, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Maybe but it's kind of nice knowing what our class has done and what there's did. It might be better to focus more on our class. I thought that the old page was there as an example? Maybe?
Re: Re: main page -- Khotton 21:01, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know ... when we were talking about in class it seemed like it was all supposed to be one big wiki
Re: Re: Re: main page -- Amille90 15:00, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hey I think you're right actually, do you maybe want to split up some things and start restructuring in class today? I think we just need to make sure we are putting up repeat information, but merging them together.
Linking -- Mhefner 16:11, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm going through and trying to add in links from the articles to others (as in, making wherever it says someone name a link to that person's wiki article). Feel free to help me out.
Re: Linking -- Asteven8 17:04, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Re: Linking -- Apankiew 18:59, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
- We can also consolidate several topics because many are closely related. The Parts of Speech category could, for instance, fall entirely under Sentence Composition. We could stand to lose other undeveloped pages (or under-developed) entirely.
Stylish People -- Lvought 19:06, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
"Stylish People" feels awkward to me, but maybe I just need to lighten up. Anyone else have thoughts on that usage?
Re: Stylish People -- Apankiew 21:56, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Haha. I actually like "Stylish People." It's fun.
Re: Stylish People -- Dmueller 23:54, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's deliberately playful. The previous version was "People." I thought "Stylish People" created a new layer of meaning while also pointing out that the people listed are understood to have worked on something to do with style and technology.
Re: Re: Stylish People -- Steve Arquette 01:44, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- English Stylish? <<more specific
Shakespeare -- Mhoak 00:33, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
One of the people mentioned in the index of Style is Shakespeare and I noticed today that there's no page for him. I think I'm going to start one.
Re: Shakespeare -- Apankiew 21:56, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not seeing how he's immediately relevant to our class' discussion of style. What about him do you want to focus on?
Re: Re: Shakespeare -- Mhoak 05:27, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I realized that he's not related at all shortly after I started working on him and decided to work on a different topic.
Tropes in Twitter -- Apankiew 21:59, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
Is anyone working on this page? It's awfully lifeless, which is disappointing because it sounds like a neat concept. Even so, it might be better off in the Twitter section.
Going Forward -- Ewojnar 14:58, February 22, 2010 (EST)
As I am new to the idea of working with Wiki I am curious if anyone has any plans going forward of how they will use this technology. Either in their selected field of study or in their career?
Any Ideas? -- Sshiple3 18:22, May 20, 2010 (EDT)
I am going to be posting this on Twitter as well and I know it may be a little early but I have started looking at the categories and topics we can add to and create our own. Do any of you have any ideas for aticles we can do?
Thanks.
Re: Any Ideas? -- Wlester3 21:26, May 21, 2010 (EDT)
Hi,
I was thinking we could do a lot with the Elements of Style book. Maybe we could explain the different rules in the book. We, as a class, could probably make this really creative.
Re: Re: Any Ideas? -- Clittle8 22:13, May 21, 2010 (EDT)
- The STYLE page doesn't currently include Strunk's point of view. I think that it would definitively be something that we - the class - could work on.
I also agree that there seems to be little referring to or referencing The Elements of Style.
Re: Re: Re: Any Ideas? -- KBryant 23:27, May 22, 2010 (EDT)
- I agree that we as a class should to Elements of Style. Strunk's "little book" has a lot of useful information.
