Rappers use a number of different rhetorical tools and devices when they are performing.
In her chapter of Style in Rhetoric and Composition: A Critical Sourcebook, Geneva Smitherman speaks about how African American oral traditions have come about. Rap and the manner in which people speak are discussed, as well as the behavior that those individuals exhibit. Rap and sermons are the two manners of speech that are highlighted within the piece.
