What is this for? -- Sodonohu 18:29, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

What, if anything, could we use the community portal/current events pages for?

I think the current events page should include the current course schedule. What else could it include?
Some wikis use their "Portal" as a links page to aid collaboration. What links could be added to HihiWiki?

Community portal is another discussion area. Obviously, there are several, and early on in Project Two we will have to monitor them to see which ones take off. There is a danger in copying and pasting the course schedule into the HihiWiki:Current_events area. The danger is this: it creates a transclusive text, or a copy. But this copy is not maintained in any systematic way. In other words, were I to change the course schedule, I might not visit the version on the Current events page to update it. Perhaps a link would be a better choice in this case.
Steve, when you ask what links could be added, are you posing that as a general question for the overall architecture of the wiki? Or are you thinking in terms of context-specific links, the kind we are likely to find in specific entries?

Wiki help, orphaned pages, and an article stubs list could be appropriate links to include in the portal.
I can see how it would be more helpful to include a link to the syllabus&schedule.
Within this wiki are already pages by the 2009 class groups who sometimes write separately about the same subject. When this class also writes on the same subject, a template could be used for trasclusion. Then the group's writing on that subject would be somewhat standardized, without the need for a main entry on a subject. The template tag is Template:Template name...see EDIT tab for the code. Wikipedia says "Use of the template functionality of MediaWiki to include the same content in multiple documents without having to edit those documents separately."
