140 Characters

Sagolla offers readers advice for using Twitter in his handbook 140 Characters. In this book, he begins by addressing style in composition as well as the benefits and negatives of short-form communication. Essentially, Twitter is short-form communication. Throughout the course of the text, it is apparent that there are many tips and forms of advice to be given to the social networking community. He provides such examples as, "One drunken, angry tweet could ruin you," and "never tweet about something before it happens." Text 9,10. Think of some infamous female starlets. While some may not understand the point of Twitter, it stands to act as a social networking tool. Though it may not provide the deepest connections available, it does stand to act as both a means of communication and a new innovative style of composition, especially in today's world where fast and short are two characteristics that define our busy, technology filled lives.

Dom Sagolla offers writing advice as well. Since there are only 140 characters allowable to tweet, it is imperative that you as the writer are direct, clear and tweet simplified updates. As he said," Be short, blunt, vigorous, concise" (Text 17). One recalls Strunk and White's advice "Omit Needless Words." The intent is to send out a message that is condensed to specifically the material that is essential. Hashtags are another way in which to group longer messages that may be about the same subject.

While it seems as though he covers an extensive amount of information, Sagolla is still able to convey to the readers' real life situations that could possibly happen to them. Privacy decreases with all of the technology available today. It is crucial in social networking that you are aware of what you are putting on display. Once in cyberspace, there will always be a record for all to see, and when considering job opportunities in the future, this is an especially important subject.
